MANSA Technical Meeting - 23 March 2006

THE CHANGING NATURE OF MANUFACTURING RESEARCH AND HOW TO ACCESS RESEARCH FUNDING- A 3 pronged attack

The presentation will feature three eminent speakers in the area of Australian Manufacturing Research.

Manufacturing is a strategically critical wealth developer for this country. In order to stay in business, both SMEs and firms need to understand the importance of R&D and how they can remain at the top of their own sectors. Professor La Brooy gives examples of firms who have engaged in IR&D and will outline some of the recent developments in manufacturing over a wide range of industries to take manufacturing into the future. He will also explain how the Development side of R&D is important to SMEs and how these firms can access available government funds.

John Coulson will unravel the web of existing government schemes and mechanisms available to access support for Manufacturing R&D programs. He will give direct examples of how SMEs and big firms have accessed these funds in the past.

Dr. John Blakemore from the IR&D Board will reveal a perspective of manufacturing research as seen by the Board. He will refer to the reasons some applications are seen in a more favourable light than others from the granting bodies perspective. He will also present a manufacturing model that has made firms in Tasmania and New South Wales world competitive.
